of the flat—the ways in which flatness can be ripe and round, rough and uneven.
While sketching cardboard—from packaging, men’s shirts and boxes, he began crafting
on the canvas “folding patterns” and figures appeared.Canadian artist Alexander
Irving holds an MFA from York University and a BFA from the NSCAD. Irving has
exhibited at Birch Libralato, Blackwood Gallery and Diaz Contemporary. In 2009

to Saturday 11am to 6pm 1955: A Group Show Fascinated by the optimism of the
1950s, Stephen Bulger has long considered 1955 to be the epitome of this era,
so often mythologized and made nostalgic in North American mass media. This
exhibition contains works by various makers, all photographed in 1955, displaying
many different approaches to photography. Jan 21, 2012 Feb 18, 2012
Will Munro: History, Glamour, Magic continues to March 11, 2011 Sadly, in May
2010 Toronto’s beloved Will Munro (Feb 11, 1975 – May 21, 2010) passed away
after a two-year battle with brain cancer. The exhibition concentrates on the
multi-media work Munro produced after graduating from OCAD in 2000, i.e., from
his first exhibition Boys Do First Aid (2000) to his last, Inside the Solar
Temple of the Cosmic Leather Daddy (2010): from his various signature underwear
work (handcrafted, for instance, from heavy metal concert T-shirts); banners
of legendary queer performers such as Klaus Nomi and Leigh Bowery; his stitching
collaborations with West Side Stitches Couture Club, Jeremy Laing, and others,
including a restaging of The Pavilion of Virginia Puff-Paint, his collaboration
with Laing made for the AGYU in 2004; his experimental films; the multitude
of hand-made silkscreen posters that accompanied his DJ’ing and music promotions
at his club nights Vazaleen, Peroxide, No T.O., and Moustache. The dynamic exhibition
will be punctuated by a collection of never before seen ephemera and archival
material that stitches together the many vibrant activities of this non-stop
artist. Art Gallery of York University Accolade East Building, York University

Coming After - Featuring artists from New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, Toronto
and beyond, Coming After is a response to the recent renewal of interest in
the period from the mid-1980s to early 1990s that was decisive for North American
cultural politics. This time period witnessed the Culture Wars, the birth of
"queer" as an identity and theory, and the rise of a direct-action
AIDS activist movement fighting a new plague that was devastating communities
of artists, queers and people of colour.
